Mulholland Drive
Concepts for Movie Poster, Web, and Advertising
Project Background
Mulholland Drive (also written as Mulholland Dr.) is one of the most celebrated films of director David Lynch. Featuring a poignant non-linear story line, evocative cinematography, and subtle yet powerful visual metaphors, this film is a complex
maze that defies classification. This being the case, I was eager to use it as the subject of a design class assignment, so that I could attempt to translate the film—with its many facets and its esoteric appeal—into coherent, static imagery for the purpose of fictional promotion and collateral identity. For this assignment, I created a movie poster, a promotional banner and billboard, a website landing page, and DVD packaging.

Photo Composite Imagery
The movie poster is the grounding piece of the visual identity I created for the film. It features three of the primary characters from the movie arranged in a photo composite overlaid with dark gradients and a photograph of Mulholland Drive and Los Angeles. The heavy use of dark blues references the movie’s symbolic use of the color, and the moody coloring echoes the evocative and sometimes eerie visual language of the film. The images of the characters, and their arrangement on the poster, hint at the relationships between them, and the juxtaposition between the jubilant awe on Betty’s face at the forefront and the reticent expressions of the characters in the background provides visual tension that also recalls conflicts from the film.
